I'm a huge fan of professor Cal Newport and his writing, especially his book "So Good They Can't Ignore You". Its focus on relentlessly building and refining your skills until you are an absolute expert vs. only focusing on passion as you decide what to do or where to go next has been a really good framework for me. 

I find whenever I've needed to learn something new, I am much happier that I not only gained the skill, but also really tried to become an expert at it. I find that that is coming up A LOT these days. Thanks Cal!
