If you’ve been scrolling through the latest iPhone accessories and found yourself wondering, “What is a MagSafe case?”—fear not! In this post, I will provide an overview of what MagSafe cases are, why you might consider one, and what they mean to the future of phone cases. They might just be the superhero your phone needs!
Before we get too far into the details, I also want to make sure to mention that I am the founder/CEO of OpenCase, a MagSafe case start-up. Generally, I try to keep these type of posts away from my business, so I can give you the information you need. I wanted to give you the heads up that I am going to discuss OpenCase, but only as it relates to the types of MagSafe cases.
What is a MagSafe case?
Before we can launch into cases, let's briefly discuss MagSafe. Apple developed MagSafe, or a series of magnets around its wireless charging coil, for the iPhone 12. This was done to guarantee that the iPhone would snap into perfect alignment for wireless charging every time. In addition, it created a magnetic canvas for attaching a variety of accessories, like the Apple Battery, wallets, and more. Every iPhone since 12 has included this revolutionary feature.
Commonly, MagSafe cases have a magnetic ring built into them. The magnets inside the case mirror the exact location of those built into the back of the iPhone. Because distance weakens a magnets strength, even the thickness of a phone case can significantly reduce the holding power of the magnets in your phone, thus another set of magnets needs to be inside the case to strengthen the magnetic hold. Popular brands making this type of MagSafe case include Apple, Nomad, Spigen, Otterbox, Casetify and more.
A second approach to the MagSafe case has been creating an "open" space in the back of the iPhone case. By removing the case material between the iPhone and the wireless charger, it snaps into place every time. Additionally, accessories sit inside the case, which greatly reduces accessories sliding around or falling off, reduces bulk, and weight. Finally, the unique hole inside the case creates a lip that you can use to prop up the phone with an accessory, like a wallet. With its patent pending design, OpenCase is currently the only brand producing this type of MagSafe case.
Why Should You Consider It?
A lot of folks enjoy the ease of wireless charging with a MagSafe case. The peace of mind of knowing there's perfect alignment every time is enough. Others love the convenience of switching between different accessories and sometimes, going without one. Overall, they offer a balanced blend of protection, style, practicality and functionality.
The Future of Phone Cases
We've already discussed how Qi2 will bring magnetic charging to Andriods. As more folks use MagSafe and Qi2, MagSafe (and Qi2) cases may become more of the norm.
