Built-In Qi2

Is Built-In Qi2 Really Coming to Google Pixel?

Lately, there's been some buzz about the Google Pixel having built-in Qi2. While it wouldn't be the first Andriod, see the HMD Skyline from 2024. And yes, there was also the whole Qi2 Ready thing with Samsung Galaxy S25's release. Google might be the first to really nail the execution of Qi2. And we, at OpenCase, would love that to be true, because who doesn't love magnetic charging? In this post, we'll look at relationship of built-in Qi2 with the HMD Skyline and Galaxy 25, and what it could mean to the Google Pixel.

The HMD Skyline

HMD is a Finnish independent mobile phone company. In 2016, they acquired the Nokia Corporation that sold to 2014. For years, HMD sold phones under the Nokia brand. In 2024, they started using their corporate name, HMD (Human Mobile Devices), for some of their brand's phones. By 2025, they totally phased out using the Nokia brand. And that's how Nokia was always HMD, but then became publicly known as HMD.

It's pretty ingenious that a brand that wanted to be known as "not Nokia" took a popular feature from competitor Apple, and decided to be the first to do it for Andriod. It's a helluva a way to set yourself apart from the other Andriods, or at least, create more interest in your phone. Let alone their "user repair" feature!

So what was the built-in Qi2 experience? The built-in Qi2 was there, but not reliable with all charging devices and the strength of the magnets left something to be desired. I'll let the expert at Wired, who has actually spent time with the model, give you the full low down.

What Is Qi2 Ready?

In January 2024, Samsung released the Galaxy S25. While there had been speculation that Qi2 would come built into the phones, it did not come to pass. Instead, they unveiled that it would be "Qi2 Ready". What does that mean, my friends? It means that Galaxy S25 users could slap a a Qi2 compatible case (a case with magnets built into it). The compatible case was the key to unlocking charging alignment, faster charging speeds and using accessories. Although one there seems to be some inconsistency about how reliable the "faster charging speeds" are even with a compatible case.

Will Google Pixel have built-in Qi2?

Google is an Andriod giant. They have incentive to provide a more powerful Qi2 experience. Apple users love it, and Andriod users are asking for it. While the first steps towards Qi2 with the HMD and Galaxy are movement towards a high quality Qi2 experience, Google really has a chance to build on it and bring their customers a next level experience. While we obviously don't know the future any better than you do, we'd love to see the Pixel incorporate magnetic charging into their design.

Around OpenCase HQ, the wife and I talk regularly about who will be the first Andriod brand that we can make a case for.  And Google Pixel 10, we're rooting for you!
