Peter Moskos argues we should pay police more in his latest view. What do you think? His argument looses steam a bit when he points out that the base rate for some police in New York City is more than $80,000.

When you see stories about cops being laid off---see here--it's hard to imagine raises.

The difference between teachers and police, though, is that one of them literally risks their lives. I'm not saying that teaching isn't important or that teachers are sufficiently paid. But I do think it's reasonable that society pays police more money since they put their lives at risk when they go out on patrol or make an arrest.

No, they should not be pitted against one another. But there is a limited pot of money--and we need to spend it wisely. Now more than ever, given the economic status.
